Biography:

SHORT:

A sound sculptor in a coat of many colors, Vancouver based artist Mariah Mennie is a composer, pianist, vocalist, percussionist, fire dancer and music educator. Her eclectic sound world is effervescent, evoking programmatic vistas of mystical lands, wild natural places, fantastical words and psychological intricacies of the mind. Her compositions have been performed most notably, at the 2017 ISCM World New Music Days, the VSO New Music Festival and the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival. She holds a MMUS and BMUS (Composition) from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a diploma in piano performance (VCC).

LONG: 

A sound sculptress in a coat of many colors, Vancouver based artist Mariah Mennie is a composer, pianist, vocalist, percussionist, fire dancer, arranger and music educator. 

​

She composes music in a wide variety of styles and genres; from solo to orchestral; film music to jazz; electronics to chamber ensemble; prog rock to contemporary classical art music. She is very interested in cross disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaborations and the many music traditions from around the world. Her eclectic sound world is effervescent, inspired by wild natural places, fantastical words, dreams, psychological intricacies of mind and a very creative imagination.

Her compositions have been performed most notably, at the 2017 ISCM World New Music Days, the VSO New Music Festival, the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival and the Invermere Waterfront Festival. She has received commissions and collaborated with many groups including the Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra, Redshift Music Society, Turning Point Ensemble, Vancouver New Music, Fringe Percussion, Driftwood Percussion, Hard Rubber Orchestra, the West Coast Symphony Orchestra and the Plastic Acid Orchestra. She has participated in workshops with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, the Hard Rubber Orchestra, the Standing Wave Ensemble, CMC's Class Axe, Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra’s Sounds Global and SFU's Launch Festival.

Mariah has a diverse and colorful set of performance skills. From her own eclectic shows, to performing at restaurants, weddings, private parties, busking, and touring - to full orchestral shows in which she acts as a co-collaborator, composer/arranger, and fire performer, her experiences are all dynamic and wide ranging.

​

As well performing and composing, Mariah is also a passionate music educator; she teaches piano, percussion, theory, history and composition from her own private teaching studio.

 

Mariah has had the honor of studying composition with Keith Hamel, Dorothy Chang, Stephen Chatman, Jocelyn Morlock, Pat Carrabré and John Korsrud, as well as coaching with Rodney Sharman, Edward Top, Giorgio Magnanensi Jacquie Leggatt, Emilie LeBel, Christine Jensen, Jill Townsend and Farshid Samandari.

 

She holds a MMUS (composition) and a BMUS (composition) from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a diploma in piano performance (VCC).
